Your income will be based on the market value of the goods, services or other value that you are able to exchange for money.
What are your talents, knowledge, professional level of performance, character and social skills worth to society? These all affect your ability to make money.
If you have an average level of skills available for you to make money, then there will be a lot of competition for the jobs available for your level of skill.
How prepared are you to deliver value that is in demand? Is what value you have to offer society in high demand versus the supply? Or does what value you have to offer, have a high supply in relation to demand? You get paid according to the market value of goods or services that you can provide.

There are many talented college grads, with many years of training that are out of work. Why, because there is a high supply in relation to the demand for their field of study.
If they had understood the secret of how to make good money before they chose that field of study, would they still have chosen that field? If they had majored in a field with a low supply in relation to demand, then they would probably be working today and making good money.
To become a highly paid skilled professional welder, it would take less than four years. Yet the welder will get more steady employment and make a lot more money than most four or six year college grads. Why, because there is a low supply of good welders and a much higher demand.
Why are there so many good actors and actresses that are "waiting tables"? Look at the amount of money an actor/actress can make. Apparently there is a high demand for professional actors and actresses. The problem is, there is also a high supply of good actors/actresses. There is a much higher demand and lower supply of excellent actors/actresses.
There are many good athletics that are not making a living in the sport of their talent. That is because there are many good athletics. There is even more mediocre athletics. Those that achieved excellence in their fields are in very high demand and go on to make lots of money.
There is a high demand for excellent performance and very little supply. There is very little demand for mediocrity and a very high supply.
How do you achieve excellence in your field? You have to work at it. Pro-athletics are at the top of their game, yet they still practice every day. Why, because they understand that the best way to make good money is to stay in demand. To be in demand in a competitive field, demands being the best.
An excellent actor/actress gets paid top dollar. They did not start that way. They probably started off waiting tables. He/she achieved high levels of skill or value before they were in such high demand to make their best money.
People who can provide value that is high in demand are the ones making lots of money.
